How Much Your Building Weigh Mr. Foster?”.

RAW supports OMAH Library

RAW supports OMAH Library. OMAH Architecture Library was established by Realrich Sjarief, sponsored by RAW Architecture at the end of 2014 to accomodate young people for accessible knowledge about architecture in Indonesia. We are working on part time basis to support the architecture community which is why the library is only open during saturday and sunday. Louis Kahn once shared about his wisdom, quotations from Kahn, one of which reads: “Schools began with a man under a tree who did not know he was a teacher, sharing his realization with a few others who did not know they were students.” It’s the beginning to from a society of education, an institution of man. It is simply like what we have been doing, we start with small things, one thing at a time. We do hope the positive mindset might improve architecture as a profession or as good culture basis in greater scale. At the end, while we do not know what will happen at the end our journey, let’s deepen our understanding about architecture and its beauty, the spirit which envelope our life, like it or not, it shapes our culture.

Jakarta is one of the fastest developing cities around the world and this trend is expected to continue as it sways its way in becoming a global and modern metropolis. The city government is determined to build an effective infrastructure and transport system to place it on an equal footing with other large regional and international urban centers.

Property investors are now facing high demand for high-tech operating Mixed-Use that will adhere effectively to the cities infrastructure. Local developers, architects and contractors are in the verge of identifying the types of properties that fit into the Mixed-Use genre. Mixed-Use properties are now known as the golden egg in a developer’s portfolio. Since 2012, prices of properties have significantly increased in Jakarta, by 20 to 30 per cent with an average occupancy rate above 90% for both residential and commercial sectors.

Growing demand for real estate in Indonesia amidst strong economic performance and global investor interest, this conference will be the ideal one-stop platform for developers. Join Trueventus at Mixed-Use Development Jakarta 2014 and dive deep into the process of mastering Mixed-Use projects and ensuring successful delivery that will last for decades thus becoming an icon of a city.

Lecture Series – Collaboration between UPH School of Design and RAW

RAW collaborated with UPH School of Design to provide long life learning process between Architects, Lecturer, fresh graduates, or even people who has interest in Architecture by establishing lecture series.

The first lecture is about Working Ideas by Critics in Architecture

“He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help.” ― Abraham Lincoln

David Hutama will share lecture about working Ideas by critics in architecture. There were times when architecture changed because of paradigm breakdown just by nature of human, technology and civilisation. It established by success and failure. Critic which is a Greek derivation of the word κριτής (krités), meaning a person who offers reasoned judgment or analysis, value judgment, interpretation or observation. Critic has the position to move public opinion because of his or her credibility, reputation, depth of analysis.

Critics become complex because there are various skill which is needed such as history, precedents, or understanding elements of architecture which then judge one work in process creating excellence in working architecture.

We invited students and fresh graduates for our mini lecture series or brown bag.

It’s all about sharing working ideas by critics in architecture. It’s all discussing the possible answer of :
1) What or How is the core of critics in architecture ?
2) What is needed for preparing good critics to evaluate architecture/ design performance ?
3) What or How is the to establish opinion in architecture given by the reality ?
4) Why the critic is important ? or what is the ethic to maintain critical opinion ?

David Hutama is chair department of UPH School of Design. After receiving his bachelor degree from Parahyangan University in the year 2000, he went to Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan, to pursue his master degree in History and Theory of Architecture. In 2005 he join Department of Architecture in Universitas Pelita Harapan. David was part of the steering committee team for Jakarta Architecture Biennale 2009 and Art Director for Rubber Wood Architecture Exhibition in 2010. In 2012 he worked as the curator of Place.Making Exhibition, an exhibition of Department of Architecture UPH at Dia.Lo.Gue Exhibition, Kemang. Together with Avianti Armand and Robin Hartanto co-edited ‘Home: a Studio Talk’, published by UPH Press. He was curator of Indonesia Pavilion in Venice Biennale 2014

The discussion will be held at RAW Office at 9.30 am on 20th September 2014 . The introduction will be followed by open discussion among participants.

Kindly make your reservation to tatyana@raw.co.id or ilham@raw.co.id as soon as possible (seats are limited for 30 people) Thanks and see you !

Landscape Urbanism Paradigm

We are currently researching Landscape Urbanism Paradigm for Urban Design Development in Made in Jakarta.

W H Y L A N D S C A P E U R B A N I S M ?

Current urban developments in Indonesian cities construct its field with prioritizing the arrangement of grey infrastructures, such as road, building blocks and utility network; rather than the incorporation of open space and existing natural ecosystem. Eventually, cities become too dense and unhealthy for its inhabitants. The generic approach tend to create acontextual and unsustainable developments, where city lacks livable and enjoyable public spaces; as well as flooding, pollution, traffic jam becoming the cities’ major problems.

This come from inability of the present paradigm to balance the development of grey and green infrastructures. We need to seriously start to rethink the importance of infrastructural landscapes, instead only grey as the new possible framework for city-making. In order to achieve a sustainable future for Jakarta.

Among recent college grads, architecture majors by far have the highest unemployment rate at 13.9%. That’s according to a new report from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce. The collapse of the construction and home-building industries in the recession is to blame. Even after gaining years of experience, architecture grads ages 30 and up, have a high unemployment rate at 9.2%. [CNN@2012]

4th Lecture : Working Ideas in Business.

“Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.”
Andy Warhol

There were times when people started defining business by simply delivering good product to the customer or client. It started by establishing one relationship to another relationship between architect and clients. In this lecture we will discuss about the experience bringing business into worth living relationship between clients, architects, and between people inside the firm. We invited students and fresh graduates for our mini brown bag. It’s about sharing entrepreneurship in architecture. It’s all discussing the answer of :

1) What or How is the core of relationship between clients and architect ?
2) What is needed for establishing architecture studio ?
3) What or How is the challenge given by the reality ?
4) Why the ethic is important ? or what is the ethic to maintain relationship ?

The discussion will be held at RAW Office at 6.30 pm [16.30] on 28th August 2014 . The material will be explained briefly by Realrich followed by open discussion among participants.

2nd Lecture Series :

Almost always the men who achieve these fundamental inventions of a new paradigm have been either very young or very new to the field whose paradigm they change. — Thomas S. Kuhn

2nd session copy

The Fool’s Progress

“Life is a journey, not a destination …” (RW Emerson)

There are people among us that has the privilege to enjoy great things in their career life such as continuing education overseas, working in great international design studio/offices… living their dreams as one of the few that can shape and influence built environments, in inspiring ways, to be better ones for the greater good of many.

We want them to share their journey, their stories on how to get there and what we can learn from it. Behind every success there must be trial and tribulation, struggle and hardships. Behind every journey, there must be friends and companions, supports and promoters.
Let’s listen to one of the journey .. “Realrich Fool’s Progress”

This event is part of the effort of “Continuing the Legacy of ARS (Ahmad Rida Soemardi)”, our friend, our mentor, and our supporter, who relentlessly promoted young designers like Realrich and many others. We hope to continue this event series as a
platform for designers, architects, landscapers and planners with urban interest to interact, share and continue the legacy of Mas Tata. After our first session with Sibarani Sofian (AECOM), our second session will feature Realrich Sjarief (RAW), and we’ll continue to the next round with more interesting journeys.

Kindly make your reservation to Anastasia.Widyaningsih@aecom.com or Ade.Kurniadhi@aecom.com by June 19 (seats are limited)

Thanks and see you!

Archinesia Vol.5 – Good Design in Architecture Now.

Realrich is interviewed in Archinesia Vol.5 – Good Design in Architecture Now. Please check the note from Archinesia :

One of the most important (and now quite dominant) processes in architecture is design process, and the goal of architecture design is to attain good design.

Good design has a double meaning, aesthetic and ethic. In architecture the two should be united as a single goal that a design process should strive for. Moreover, an architectural product does not only affect its client and architect. On a broader level, architectural products also affect their surrounding environments. In a larger scale, they may even have an effect on the economy and the social and political condition.

The question is: how does an architectural design attain the label ‘good design’? We tried to find the answer through a round table discussion by inviting the two groups of architecture professionals in Indonesia: practitioners and academics. What are their thoughts on this matter? You can peruse them in the Main Coverage of Archinesia Bookgazine Volume 5. The main coverage is a transcription of the presentation of each speakers of the round table discussion, with no intervention whatsoever from our writers, which tends to steer the readers’ opinions. Why did we choose to run the transcription as is? Through this direct transcription we invite our readers to be present in the midst of the conversation circle. But what about the arguments and the formed opinions? We let them open for our readers to process, analyze, and summarize. Because we know there are no such things as standard parameters for good design. Whether or not good design is achieved by an architectural product, it is highly dependent to the condition and context of where we are.

Good designs can aslo be enjoyed through architectural works. This time we have several architects whose works are exhibited for the first time in the pages of ARCHINESIA Bookgazine, even though they are quite famous in ASEAN’s architectural scene. They are Duangrit Bunnag from Bangkok and Singapore based DP Architects and ONG&ONG. We are also delighted to show the works of young architects who are always emerging in ASEAN area, such as Revano Satria (Semarang, Indonesia), Archimetric (Surabaya, Indonesia), and Studiodasar (Jakarta, Indonesia). Are their works entitled to be called good design? We’ll let you, readers, to be the judge. At the very least, these select works are an effort to bring good design to architecture today.

Imelda Akmal

RAW supports Konteks.org

RAW supports Konteks.org which is one publication unit of University of Pelita Harapan [UPH] lead by David Hutama.

catatan tentang konteks.org

Sibarani Sofian’s Shorcut to the universe

We would like to invite students and junior/senior architects in Jakarta or apparently reside in Jakarta on Monday, April 14th, to join the presentation and discussion about experience from a graduate architecture major who has been involved in professional work and put his love and effort as a city planner.

The Inspiration from his final project is expected to create self-reflection for Indonesian architecture students, to create an understanding about the architectural process of one and another which is unique for each person, on their quest to find one for themselves in university. This event intends to be a memento for a senior’s sincerity on guiding his junior and teaching them the spirit of fraternal solidarity.

We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to present Mr. Sibarani Sofian (Regional director of AECOM Southeast Asia) as the speaker. He studied architecture in ITB in 1993, and after graduated he worked as an urban designer at RSP Architects and later at Skidmore Owings and Merrill, both in Singapore.

This event initially is dedicated to alm. Ahmad Rida Soemardi, for his passion and dedication to educate architecture students in Indonesia. Furthermore, it is aimed to give broader perspective on how to do architecture within widely-ranged public depends on the boundaries made from each discussion.

The discussion will be divided into two sessions:

First,   The topic will be about Undergraduate Final Project, which essentially a final project is the end of one’s journey through his architecture education, whereas one need to prove his final outcome in front of the examiners. In the final project, a student pour his creativity with an assistance from the counselor who bear a responsibility to encourage, enlight, and guide him about the importance of learning through a lifetime in his final year. Eventually, the Final Project itself can be seen as an ultimate stepping stone in the beginning of an architecture graduate’s career, and furthermore, to determine his destiny.

Second,   It is about the phase after one graduates from architecture school, on some parties’ effort to shape his vision to rediscover what he loves, what he desires, and what he wants to prove in his struggle to emphatize within the wider society. This time the discourse will dig deeper on the definition of urban design and urban designer, boundaries between the outcome of urban design and architecture, process that determines urban design and architecture, and their dynamics in the professional world and their distinction in Indonesia.

Moderator: Realrich Sjarief

Due to our space limitation, there will be only 35 seats available. Please RSVP to miftah@raw.co.id or rofianisa@raw.co.id to get seat confirmation.

RAW is in Archinesia 4th Edition : Cross Border Architecture

Archinesia published Akanaka in its 4th edition

The countries in this region seem to have been overlooked, whereas they have distinctive characteristics resulting from their similarities, which, among others, are similarity in historical background as some of the countries were colonized by the same colonizers (Portuguese, British, Dutch, and Japanese); identical climate condition as the countries lie near the equator; and closeness in ethnicity, ways of life, culture, and even foods. All these influence the region’s architectural development.

Then, two coincidences happened: first, we were preparing ARCHINESIA Volume 4 on the theme of “Cross-Border”, and, second, Association Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) apparently has prepared the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Architectural Services which will take effect next two years. Therefore, in this edition we discuss the theme of “Cross-Border” with a particular context of Southeast Asia. We interviewed some sources to collect the agreement-related information that Southeast Asian architects must know about.

Moreover, this edition also covered a special report on the World Architecture Festival 2013 (WAF 2013), which took place recently in Singapore from 2 to 4 October. This year’s festival was more vibrant from that of last year, especially with the presence of architects’ latest creations, which include the winner or Building of the Year category from New Zealand.

As you would expect the ARCHINESIA Volume 4 also presents architecture creations from ASEAN architects, news, agenda, and many more reports that will broaden horizons of readers and architecture enthusiasts in Southeast Asia.

RAW Won 1st Prize National Gallery of Indonesia

RAW won National Gallery of Indonesia. The design of the Galeri Nasional Indonesia ( Indonesian National Gallery ) complex is inspired by the beauty of the sky and the warmth of the earth with an intention similar to the heritage building of Galeri Nasional located right in the middle of the complex. The heritage building, built during the Dutch-Indies government era, will be framed with a gallery with an expression of greeneries representing the earth, and in the background will be the office or administrative building of the Galeri Nasional which represents the sky.

The lobby is located in the heritage building, making this building a hub for entrance and egress. A skybridge connects the heritage building with the gallery building that frames it. The reception plaza is located on the western side of the Galeri Nasional Indonesia, with a pedestrian path open to the banks of Ciliwung River. An art plaza concept will be built along the east-west axis, and art stores will be located on the north and south sides.

The design of the Galeri Nasional complex is based on the intention to maintain the image of the heritage building whose plot is only 70 meters wide; quite small when compared to the width of the heritage building itself, which is 22 meters. Therefore, the design intervention chosen for this site is landscape as the side architecture of the museum, flanking the heritage building. Connectivity is maintained through a public access from the Monumen Nasional (Monas) to the art shop in the central space of the gallery through underground tunnel. In the master plan, this connectivity issue is continued to the Ciliwung River, allowing art activities on its banks.

The master plan development is divided into two stages. The first stage is focused on the main area, the Galeri Nasional area. On this first stage, it is assumed that the land around the Galeri Nasional is in the acquisition process, thus the development is focused on the Galeri Nasional itself. The first stage, as the main function of the national gallery, can be run independently. The second stage will be conducted in the subsequent development, when the land is acquired. In the second stage, the supporting facilities of this gallery complex-convention center, auditorium, and a hotel located on the north side of the complex, facing the Monas and Gambir train station-will be built.

In general, the building masses of the Galeri Nasional Indonesia complex respond to two main axes. The Monas axis and the Galeri Nasional heritage building which was connected to the Gambir train station. The Monas axis is realized through the construction of an underground tunnel. The front and rear side of the Galeri Nasional complex hold interconnected open plazas as a response to the Monas area (at the front) and the Ciliwung River (at the rear).

The Galeri Nasional Indonesia depicts the simplicity of Indonesian architecture in harmony with nature where earth and sky merge.

Palapa Project London

[vc_column_text width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Realrich is selected as currator for Palapa Project together with Andre Klauser, Alexander Taylor, Ben Wilson, Bridget Fleming, Chandra Johan, Francis Surjaseputra, Freyja Serwell, Martin Postler, Nancy Margried, Sou Fujimoto, Suzanne Lussier, Stelios Geros, Tex Saverio, dan Yoshiko Ikoma.

Here is one of the publication by media :

Talkshow: The Successful Architect

What is the meaning of success for an architect? How can an architect be successful? And the most important question, how can an architecture student become a successful architect? A young successful architect in Indonesia, Mr Realrich Sjarief, shared his life and experience to UPH Architecture Student in a talkshow entitled “The Successful Architect” which was part of The Arcamp 2013: Project A which was held on Bidadari Island on May 19th, 2013. The audiences were enthusiastic when they heard Mr Sjarief revealed his secret of success, through many obstacles from an ordinary architecture student who ever not passing a studio until he worked for Sir Norman Foster in London, and finally opened his own architectural firm which he proudly called the best office in the world.

Mengenai Ruang – Memasyarakatkan Arsitektur

Reviving The Dead. Experiencing the Fantasy

Today will talk about an event that took place at Kemang Arcade. It was by the people from Architect Universitas Indonesia (UI). The event was called Immortalitivity Reviving the Dead. Experiencing the Fantasy. Why is it called that is because we found a lot of empty space that is forgotten around us and we made this to make those empty spaces alive with fantasies.
There’s a lot of project here that is about those spaces that is forgotten. Wow! That’s a really sweet idea. The event was a seven day event with lecturers from Realrich Sjarief and Mohammad Nanda Widyarta. They also had a talkshow by Avianti Armand and Achmad Tardiyana. I was there at the last day of the event. There was snacks, drinks, and a lot of young crowds. If you love architect, art, and design this is event for you. Well, enough of the chitchat. Check out some of the projects and pictures below!

RAW won 1st prize of Kampung Batik Competition

RAW won 1st prize of Kampung Batik National Design Competition. This competition was held by the local government of Semarang to proposed a new design and idea of the “Kampung Batik”. Kampung Batik is located at North Semarang city near the Old Colonial city of Semarang. It expected to become the center of batik , as well as a new tourist destination in Semarang city.

“Batik is a the process of writing a picture or decoration on any media by using the wax as a medium to coloring” (International Batik Convention in Yogyakarta,1997).

Therefore, in designing the “kampung batik”, the design focus on the process, stitching layer upon layer, combining the past and the future, making a harmonious design within cultures, people and the environment meet.

There are several issues during designing this Kampung Batik, they are the complexticity of the residential, lack of open space, and ownership of the building there. The realization of the design is expected to be inexpensive and can benefit all parties.

The design is divided into two phases, where at the first phase, the design propose minimal intervention to a few buildings and the neighborhoods, while continuing to raise funds. The second phase, the proposal offers new identity with the replacement of some buildings, building facades and the addition of a large canopy that stands out for the village. We also made some events proposal to maintain the continuity of the Kampung Batik.

Nafas Alam, Nafas Manusia, Nafas Desain

Tahun 2012, Prodi Arsitektur Universitas Atma JayaYogyakarta (UAJY) genap berusia 30 tahun.

MUDD. IAI.

Realrich Sjarief memberikan judul presentasinya “Nafas Alam, Nafas Manusia, Nafas Desain”.

Berbicara tentang arsitektur Indonesia masa depan, Ben Sarasvati memberi sudut pandang tersendiri.

Here is the note of the committee : Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI) Lombok bekerja sama dengan Varindo Lombok Inti mengelar Sayembara Master plan dan desain pra rencana “Lombok Epicentrum Square.

Silent Cry To The Saviour Angels, by : Kalanglarik

Realrich is in collaboration for Bayu Prasetyo’s Silent Cry To The Saviour Angels Installation at Tembi Rumah Budaya Together with other 2  artists, Susan Mayasella (visual arts), Anggitasari Mumpuni (fashion designer).

Here is the description by Media :

After winning a local poetry, storytelling and music competition in Surakarta (1993), his passion ignites from an early age. Since then on Bayu Prasetyo committing himself to arts as a medium of his contribution to the society. This chosen path unravels to be not without struggles, Bayu identifies himself as “Kalanglarik” in his dedication. In the same passion and struggles Bayu managed to complete his M.A. in Film Making from London International Film School (2006).

Silent Cry To The Saviour Angels is a selection of Kalanglarik’s notes. Without giving too much, kalang means horizons/limitations and larik from the word lyrics/words. In respect of every colors in one’s life journey, this installation celebrates the shades of grey in parallel to time. Moments where sincere offerings have no place, underrated despair, feelings of abandonment that forced us to questions our faith in The Saviour Angel’s existence -all that is hidden from our day to day survival functionalities.

An explorative piece, Bayu dedicates a space to deliver his poems through various separate installations that correlates with each other. Done by orchestrating all elements within that space, may it be props, sound, light and many others, Silent Cry To The Saviour Angels is transforming a room designed to trigger our sensory receptions and memories. An opportunity for other people to interact and engaged in the process of creating their own personal stories.

Although different, yet its creative approach is similar to film-making, which is to integrate, support and enhance the process of story-telling. Worked in close collaboration with three other artists, Susan Mayasella (visual arts), Anggitasari Mumpuni (fashion designer), Realrich Syarief (architect), along side the support of British Council Indonesia and many others, Silent Cry To The Saviour Angels is visitable at TeMBI Rumah Budaya: Jalan Gandaria I/47B, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan.

RAW is in Finalist of IAI Award 2012

RAWi in Finalist of IAI Award 2012. The committee nominated Bare Minimalist owned by Charles Wiriawan as finalist of IAI Award 2012. The Bare Minimalist Residence responds its context of the potential of the site by 3 main design intentions into one narrow site: 8 m x 24 m facing south side. The intentions are: First, by exposing building that avoid west side because of the heat of direct sunlight of tropical climate which can expose the temperature to 33 degree Celsius, second, by designing a building envelope that responds to sunlight angle during 11 am o clock until 3 pm o clock the whole year. The third is mechanical electrical plumbing design, which allow fresh air flows to the space by having special design of air conditioner unit, potable water system, and usage of minimum capacity of lighting equipment. The design of the building then conclude that the building need to face east at its widest sun exposure to facade, north, and south, but then, the cantilevered concrete prevents direct sunlight the whole year.

The void In the middle of the house functions as air chimney to respond air-stacking effect at its design core. The design of the opening grill, main door allows cross air ventilation to happen in the building by having gab 10 cm opening. The chimney allows hot air flows out through the gab. In the afternoon the layout design allows natural lighting coming in so the user doesn’t need to use artificial light. For facade of the house was designed with bare concrete and GRC to ease maintenance.

The layout of Bare Minimalist Residence use open plan concept, which allows living room and kitchen combined into open room. In the first floor, the space inside is used for guest bed room which more private space for master bedroom 3.5 x 4 m and 2 more bedrooms 3m x 3m for the kids are on the second floor. The floor to ceiling is designed by having 3 m height to get more spacious space. The public area is designed clear to be seen while the visitor come into the house, several space such as guest room, dining room, and kitchen combined into one informal space which has efficiency corridor 20 % of the total area and general space 80 % of the total area. Bare Minimalist is the first residential project which is designed by Realrich.

RAW won 2nd prize WWF Station for Orang Utan

RAW won 2nd prize WWF station for Orang Utan. World Wildlife Fund for nature (WWF) Indonesia has long been recognized as an international non-governmental organization working on issues regarding the conservation, research and restoration of the environment. The station for Orang Utan Research facility provides the research lab for preserving habitat of orang Utan. It design responds to rational for specific research, encouraging intercommunication and providing flexible, light filled working spaces in which research teams can expand and contact with ease.

The area is 12 hours drive continues by 1.5 hours transport by long boat, in total almost 900 km distance from Pontianak, the nearest city. Thedesign synthesized called for close proximity between laboratories, core support areas, offices, and Bedroom. Two organic wings and one ore frame a linear configuration formed by repetition of triangular shape which we called a practical form which is easy to construct and cheap on the budget wise. This is a philosophy beyond the functionalism which synthesized wood as the only sustainable material which has to be used.

Looking at the extinction of orang utan species, Together with the implementation of this station for research these buildings in the initial proposal hopefully will bring beautiful impact on the architecture of research facilities around the world. Not only have they set new technical standards but they represent an exciting new research environment to live with.

Lobang Kayu is in Archinesia 3rd Edition : Does Architecture shape the city or vise versa ?

Does Architecture Shape the City or Vice Versa ?

When we first set foot on a city, the first objects we are aware of are the buildings standing on it, because architecture is a visual object that most strongly shape the face of any city. Then, inevitably, the question arises in our minds: “Does architecture shape the city, or vice versa?” We asked the question to several urban experts and they all said that a city is not only shaped by its architecture, but also by its government policies, politics, economy, capital, people, transportation, and even by events held inside it. Although—undoubtedly—architecture is often used and exploited in pursuit of the ambition to create a memorable city, so much so that many cities in the world race to invite world renowned architects—or star architects, if you will—to design a number of awe inspiring urban objects or architecture. And oftentimes these constructions are nothing more than display ‘objects’, or will someday become one.

In this volume, ARCHINESIA Bookgazine observes and discusses cities in their relation to architecture. Jakarta is recently criticized by its own governor as a city bereft of identity with ‘faceless’ and generic buildings standing on it, making it identical with thousands of other cities in the world. But is identity truly the most important thing to develop in a city that is often considered grievously ill by its own citizens? We invited seven experts to give an answer about the architecture of Jakarta. Post-war Cambodia is also interesting to peruse. This Southeast Asia country is currently rebuilding its cities in the aftermath of a long fought war. On the other hand, London is changing the face of its eastern parts after the Olympic Games. Melaka, a city recognized as a world heritage city, is struggling to conserve its old architecture. Singapore, on the other hand, invited world renowned architect to design and construct a new iconic building on the Marina Bay Sands area in an attempt to fulfill the ambition to be among the top cities in the world. Almere, a small town in the Netherlands built several eye-catching buildings to grab the attention of not only the world, but also its own citizens.

The minuscule observations of the abovementioned cities are of course insufficient to answer all our questions about cities and architecture. But they will at least try to give you an idea of how the relation between a city and its architecture can affect each other, how architecture may fill a void, or even have its functions questioned and contested, since, in essence, architecture is meant to improve the quality of the people that conducted their activities inside it.

RAW won 3rd prize of Nursery Faculty University of Indonesia

RAW won 3rd prize of Nursery Faculty University of Indonesia. This project is located in University of Indonesia area, Depok. The programming of the function keeps high constraint of the building’s density for 8 storey height. The problems then synthesized the solution to have a place to be social. RAW proposed the hexagon form which then responds to the activity of the people using the place, a function that is encouraging 2 ways of learning, for the students and for the lecturer. The hexagon proves to be aesthetically challenging, efficient in plan, and could be built module by module.

The design proposed a unique atrium proposing a concept of vertical neighborhood which encourages interaction between people, remembering this is an education facility, and this place should be a place for people learning from people, people sharing for people, and people keep relationship with people. The terracing balconies extruded from the façade creates self-shaded device which the combination creates roof garden that is the place for people for enjoying fresh air.

The concept of allowing the fresh air to circulate divided by 2 concepts, the first one is creating cross air circulation through the opening of the roof garden and the second, is allowing air stacking system by introducing chimney at the top floor.

The façade designed carefully by studying what does work for preventing direct sunlight. The solution is specifically located by open the wall to the certain size horizontally then the expression is purely functional and beautifully crafted by nature. Thank you for Andhang as a leader for team. It is such fantastic work.

50 Indonesian architects + Emergings

Realrich Sjarief is in 50 Indonesian architects + Emergings book by Imelda Akmal Architecture Writer. Here is the description by Jakarta Post : Over the past decade, Indonesian architects have redefined and rediscovered Indonesian architecture. By consistently building and experimenting, they have created a new face for contemporary Indonesian architecture.

Their efforts have paid off. Now the world has begun to recognize the remarkable work of Indonesian architects, many of whom have won several contests.

Indonesians have also begun to acknowledge architecture by adoring tall buildings and skyscrapers that flourissh in cities across the country that have been designed by local architects.

No doubt Indonesian architects have shaped this country and its society. Through the distinctive character of Indonesian architecture that they have brought to the surface, they have changed the perspective about Indonesian architecture and changed society to be the part of architecture as well.

But who would care to write about the people who were in charge of constructing dreams in the concrete jungle? It could only be Imelda Akmal.

Local architects should give a toast to Imelda for publishing another architecture book, 50 Indonesian Architects + Emergings. Once again, she has proven her passion for architecture by publishing books. Earlier, she published Indonesian Architecture Now and Indonesian Architecture Now 2.

Imelda is one of a few architects who enjoy careers as architectural writers. With her team members at the Imelda Akmal Architectural Writers Studio (Studio IAAW), she has published over 70 architectural works, though she said that there were numerous Indonesian architects who had a tremendous amount of work experience who should write about architecture.

“It doesn’t mean that they can’t write. They just haven’t wanted to, though I think they are competent to write architectural reviews or probably architectural critiques. That’s why I always encourage my colleagues to start writing. I hope this book also can be a trigger,” Imelda said at the book’s launch at The Dharmawangsa, South Jakarta.

Her new book is comprised of 50 short profiles of well-known Indonesian architectural firms and 13 new architectural firms (the “emergings”), who are considered influential on Indonesian architecture these days.

Imelda and her team separated the groups based on their years of experience. The Indonesian Architects group was dominated by architectural firms that were formed at least five years ago, while the Emergings category has profiles of new firms established less than five years ago.

Those 13 young names on the Emergings list include 12akitek, Aboday, Avianti Armand, Boy Bhirawa, DX6, HMP Architects, Labo, Made Dharmendra, Parametr architecture, Realrich sjarief, SUB Studio, Suwardana Winata, and Zenin Adrian, while the 50 Architects category included big names such as Andra Matin, Baskoro Tedjo, Grahacipta Hadiprana, PTI Architects, Sardjono Sani, Urbane and Yori Antar.

RAW is finalist of Pasar Johar Semarang Competition

RAW is finalist of Pasar Johar Semarang Competition.

RAW is finalist of Landscape Centrum University of Indonesia Competition

RAW is finalist of Landscape Centrum University of Indonesia Competition. Here is the description of the scheme, Eco Centrum.

RAW won 1st prize Vocational University Indonesia

Glenn Murcutt “The light and sounds of land are already there I just make the instrument make the instruments that allow people to perceive these natural qualities.”

Archinesia Bookgazine, Terobosan Baru Publikasi Berkala Arsitektur Indonesia

RAW won 1st Prize RS UGM National Competition at Central Java

RAW won 1st prize of Teaching Hospital at Sleman, Central Java.

Gagasan Rancangan Rumah Sakit Akademik (RS Akademik).
